Bonfire
King Shaytan left us in the meranium box with a small barrel of water and the promise that we would be looked after. Every bit if that made any departure.
Caia and I were prisoners, trapped, at the mercy of the rex of daemons. My claret boiled as I paced the small box, while Caia leaned her dorsum against one of the walls. Our reflections were blurry on the shiny metal surface, and my steps echoed in the small tunnel through which Shaytan had pushed our water. The box was approximately 3 past three meters, its walls at least ten meters thick, completely sealed and with nothing but that fiddling tunnel connecting us to the outside globe—even Caia couldn't fit through it.
We di
dn't even know if Harper, Caspian, Hansa, and Jax had fabricated information technology out live.
"What do we exercise?" Caia murmured, her gaze fixed on the floor.
It wasn't the first time she had asked that question. She seemed lost, and it tore me apart on the inside to see her so distraught and vulnerable.
"For now, all nosotros can do is get a little bit of rest," I replied. "Just to clear our heads and get prepare for what comes next."
"What exactly is coming next?" Caia asked. "I mean, we are stuck here. Nosotros cannot use our burn to leave. Whatever this meranium metal does, it includes stifling our but weapon against these daemons. On elevation of that, we have no idea where the others are, if they fifty-fifty fabricated it out, if they're okay… and let's non forget that if yous try to go full dragon, I'one thousand going to get crushed in the process. Then what comes next?"
She was frustrated, and I couldn't exactly arraign her—I felt the same. But I wasn't going to let her fall prey to whatever the daemons had in store for us, and I certainly wasn't going to let her succumb to whatsoever kind of panic or, worse, hopelessness.
I stopped, then turned to face her, and I felt my heart swell painfully with the need to hold her. She looked up at me, her teal eyes wide and glazed with tears.
"Let's take information technology 1 stride at a time, Caia," I said. "We won't be in here forever. If the others are out at that place, they will come up for u.s.a.."
"Simply do they know where nosotros are?"
"I'm sure they will find out, one way or another," I replied, feeling the confidence return to my voice. "As well, we are well-nigh likely inside the palace. They will figure information technology out. Harper's relentless, you know that. She volition stop at aught to get you back."
"To go u.s. dorsum." She gave me a weak smile.
"Sure." I shrugged, feigning disinterest. "To get usa dorsum. But we both know I'm non the ane she'due south besties with."
At least she nonetheless had the forcefulness to smile, and even chuckle. It meant that there was still hope, non simply for her, but for the both of united states of america, considering she was my anchor and I was hers.
"And what if…" Her expression changed from a mild half-smile to a deep, shadowy frown as she choked upwardly. "What if they didn't make it? What if… What if we are stuck here? At Shaytan's mercy… What are we going to do and so?"
I let a long and heavy sigh roll out of my chest, my shoulders dropping. I struggled to discover a positive outcome in all of this. There was no way I was going to rot in here, and there certainly wasn't whatever mode that I would allow Caia spend the rest of her life in a meranium box.
"Nevertheless, they won't go along us in here forever," I replied. "They will accept to allow us out at some point, whether information technology'll exist to put me in chains, or to transfer u.s.a. to another larger, equally charmed box. We both know past now that they probably possess plenty swamp witch magic to restrain my dragon abilities in the long term. I tin can't be certain, at this point, merely given what we've seen so far, I can speculate."
"So, what? We just wait for a practiced opening?" she asked, and I didn't miss that tinge of sarcasm in her tone.
Nonetheless, we were suddenly interrupted. The latch at the terminate of the minor tunnel opened with a loud clang. Both Caia and I immediately moved to the opening to see who was out there.
"Oh, hello, pets." The daemon sneered, narrowing his red eyes at the states. He wasn't a regular grunt, judging by his heavy leather tunic and the gold thread woven around his horns, which stretched downward and backward. His long blackness hair was smooth and tightly braided on the sides, each lock ending in a cluster of beads. He was royalty, and he looked familiar.
"Who are you?" I asked, my tone rough, my anger aural.
He chuckled, carefully analyzing Caia and me, equally if we were zoo exhibits.
"I suppose it's only fair that yous know the name of your… caretaker," the daemon replied. "I am Mammon, son of Shaytan."
"Our flagman?" Caia shot back, raising an countenance, unable to hibernate her contempt.
"Well, yeah," Mammon replied, then pushed a modest wooden tray through the tunnel. It didn't get all the way to the finish, where nosotros stood, so I had to reach out and pull it toward us. It held two warm steel dishes. They had actually made an effort to provide us with food. "Equally yous can run into, I am taking care of you. Therefore, I am your caretaker. Although, to be fair, I would much rather swallow your souls than feed you, merely Male parent says you are non to exist touched yet."
He didn't seem happy with that decision, but I couldn't say I was bothered. On the reverse, it meant that Shaytan needed us live and in 1 piece, for whatever reason.
"And then what are we doing hither?" I asked.
Mammon rolled his eyes, as if he couldn't be bothered to respond such bones questions.
"You two have no thought what y'all've gotten yourselves into," he scoffed. "You don't even know half of what is really going on, but you sure are great to ask the nigh unnecessary questions. Practise you really recollect it matters why you are here? Because, frankly, you should both know that this is where you terminate. And then is it fifty-fifty worth it to inquire why?"
"Okay, smartass," Caia retorted, "how well-nigh nosotros try another question? Such as, what is really going on here?"
Mammon chuckled, slowly shaking his head. My only wish was that my artillery were long enough for me to reach out and snap his neck similar a chicken's. Fire raged through me, fueled by my disability to go myself and Caia out of this mess.
"Now that is a question that I would honey to reply, just I can't," he said.
"Then why did y'all mention it?" She scowled at him.
"Purely for the joy of messing with you, of form."
I snapped. My throat burned, and I released a thick river of burn down through the tunnel. I still had my blazing breath, though it had no concrete impact on the meranium box itself. Mammon went pale for a split 2d, and so swiftly shut the latch tight earlier my flames could achieve him.
A couple of seconds went by. Both Caia and I stared at the darkness of the sealed tunnel.
"Okay, and then, perhaps if you effort that over again, but faster, so they don't expect it, we might have a shot?" Caia looked at me, raising her eyebrows and pursing her lips.
"I'm not sure that will work over again." I frowned. "Mammon volition probably be more conscientious the next time he pops by."
A few minutes passed, and the latch opened once again. We stilled. Information technology wasn't Mammon this time. Based on the gold thread woven around his horns, this was another prince, just none of the ones I'd seen at the earlier gathering. I couldn't help but wonder if I could try that fire breath play a trick on again. Perhaps I could await another minute, and but judge his reflexes. I couldn't take chances exhibiting a habit for which they could be prepared, going forrad.
"And who are you?" I said.
"I was wondering who my brother was talking to before. It looked kind of weird from the outside," the daemon prince replied. "As if he were talking to a hole in a wall. For a 2d, I idea he'd lost his listen."
"Who the hell are yous? What exercise you want?" Caia had run out of patience.
"Ah, yous're that fire fae," the daemon shot back. "You can definitely hold your own in a fight. I watched y'all the day before, when you were looking for your friend in the gorges. Information technology'southward a shame you concluded up in here."
"You lot were in the gorge yesterday?" She frowned. "You lot still haven't answered my question. Who are you lot?"
"I'm the one who gave your friend back to yous," he replied.
It dawned on me and so who we were talking to. This was the daemon that had abducted Fiona.
"You're Zane," I breathed. That was fifty-fifty more disruptive, looking back. What was a prince doing around Azure Heights? Most importantly, what was he doing kidnapping our friend? "You're a prince."
"That, unfortunately, I am. And you're a dragon, stuck in a box." He snorted.
"Yeah, the irony does non escape me either," I muttered.
"Concord on," Caia replied, "so, if you're a prince, why did you release Fiona? And wh
"Whoa, whoa, whoa." Zane lifted his hands in a dismissive gesture. "Outset of all, whatever I do with Fiona is my business, and mine alone. 2d, I am non getting involved in whatsoever… this is. I do my best to stay out of the king's business."
"Just you lot're a prince. Y'all sit down on the Council. You are role of the king's business," Caia said.
"Well, aren't you perceptive," Zane scoffed. "It's true, I exercise sit on the Council, and I'm impressed that you know that, but I do non try to interfere much. I merely cast my vote whenever my brothers push button for some new law. And so, yep, technically speaking, I am office of the king's business, as y'all and so bluntly put it, simply not every bit much as you might retrieve."
"But you chose to release Fiona." Caia didn't give up. "That makes me call up that yous're not one-half every bit bad as the residue of your… family unit. Help the states go out of here. Otherwise, Fiona volition come looking for united states of america, along with the others."
"Listen, if I were you, I would be more than worried about your state of affairs." Zane adopted a nonchalant demeanor. "I'm not getting involved. I'll think about it, at all-time."
He so airtight the latch, depriving united states of america of the opportunity to farther try to convince him to aid the states. Caia then looked at me, business organisation drawing shadows between her eyebrows. As dire as our situation was at this point, I still couldn't ignore the magnetism charging the air around u.s..
"Clearly," I said, trying to focus on what had just happened, "Zane is pretty much entitled to sentry out for himself before anyone else. It is difficult for me to see him just dropping everything to assistance us. I'm guessing the wrath of Shaytan could be as mortiferous to him equally to anyone else."
